Standard Deck Joist Centers
No Wobbly Decks: Simple Rules for Joist Spacing
A well-built garden deck adds significant value and enjoyment to any UK home. While the visible decking boards capture attention, the joists – the foundational beams beneath – are crucial for a safe, stable, and long-lasting structure. Understanding correct joist spacing is paramount for any decking project.
Understanding Joist Centres & Spacing
Joist centres refer to the measurement from the centre of one joist to the centre of the next. This spacing directly impacts the support provided to your decking boards. Insufficiently spaced joists can lead to sagging, excessive flex, or premature failure of the decking surface.
For many garden decking projects in the UK, the maximum joist spacing is between 300mm to 500mm. The actual value will depend on the decking board material and its thickness.
Joist Spacing For Timber Decking Boards
For traditional timber decking, such as our 28mm thick redwood pine, a maximum joist spacing of 500mm is typically recommended. This thickness of timber provides sufficient inherent strength to span this distance without significant deflection, ensuring a stable and durable surface. Exceeding this recommendation can result in a bouncy deck or accelerated wear of the boards.
For timber decking boards that are thinner than our decking boards, the maximum spacing should be reduced.
Joist Spacing For Composite Decking Boards
Composite decking, valued for its durability and low maintenance, generally requires tighter joist spacing due to its material composition. Specific recommendations vary considerably between manufacturers and even across different product ranges. For instance, some NewTechWood composite decking ranges may specify a maximum joist spacing between 350mm to 400mm. This closer spacing accommodates the distinct flex properties of composite materials compared to solid timber.
The purpose of the installation may also affect the recommended joist spacing, with commercial projects requiring tighter spacing than residential to compensate for heavier traffic.
Crucially, always consult the manufacturer's specific installation guidelines for your chosen composite decking product. Failure to adhere to these recommendations can compromise the deck's structural integrity and may invalidate product warranties.

Does Joist Material Influence Spacing?
While the decking board material is the primary factor dictating joist spacing for the deck surface, the joist material itself (typically C16 or C24 graded timber in the UK) generally has less direct bearing on this specific measurement.
Provided the joists are appropriately sized and graded for the overall span and anticipated loads, their material composition doesn't necessitate a change in the spacing required to support the decking boards. The dimensions of the joists (their depth and width) will be calculated based on the total span they need to cover and the expected load, which is a separate structural consideration.
Key Considerations for Your Decking Project:
- Manufacturer Specifications: Always prioritize the joist spacing recommendations provided by the decking board manufacturer. This is critical for safety, longevity, and warranty compliance.
- Structural Integrity: Do not compromise on adequate joist support. Insufficient spacing can lead to instability and costly repairs down the line.
- Anticipated Load: Consider how the deck will be used. While decking board type dictates spacing, a higher anticipated load (e.g., heavy planters, outdoor kitchens, hot tubs) might warrant a slightly reduced spacing as an additional precaution, or more significantly, require larger joist dimensions.
- Detailed Planning: Before commencing construction, develop a comprehensive plan for your deck's substructure, ensuring it aligns with the specific joist spacing requirements of your chosen decking boards.
